If you're seeking the fast track to cool design, one formula that never fails to raise a smile is trompe l'oeil, a French term meaning 'trick the eye'.
First applied to fashion in the 1920s by designer Elsa Schiaparelli (see above), trompe l'oeil is riding high in fashion again as part of the jazz age trend kick started by Sky Atlantic's recent series, Boardwalk Empire.
